Safety and Quality Management - Quality Plus Inc. take integrated management to international concerence
International Conference on ISO 9000 and Quality Management Systems - Orlando Florida. "Integrated HSEQ Management Systems - Leading Strategies and Solutions"
Terri Andrews and Wayne Pardy of Quality Plus in St. John’s have returned from presentations on integrating management systems at events in Orlando and Las Vegas. The consultants have co-authored a text on the subject.
Their consulting business is based in St. John's but Terri Andrews and Wayne Pardy recently found themselves presenting their business management ideas to international audiences. Andrews, the President of Quality Plus and Pardy, the company’s HSEQ (health, safety, environment and quality) Manager, and Pardy are a husband and wife business team and co-authors of “Integrated Management Systems: Leading Strategies and Solutions.”
Their book was produced by a Maryland-based publisher in 2011 and is a specialized text, but has garnered attention from individuals in the United States and Canada fluent in the language of health, safety, environmental and quality management systems.
Talk of the text earned them an invitation to the International Conference on ISO 9000 standards, held at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress hotel in Orlando, Feb. 26-28 (www.iso9000conference.com). The pair attended, presenting the ideas in their book and promoting the idea of system integration within businesses.
They explained for The Telegram that international standards are available for various business systems — such as a health and safety system. A company’s system can be registered under the standard, and with regular reviews the company can maintain a certification recognizable to multinational corporations.
It is essentially a stamp of approval on ‘this is how we do things.’
Andrews and Pardy offer training in management systems and help companies to establish and evaluate their systems — for example, conducting assessments to find potential safety gaps or conducting quality and environmental audits.
They also find areas of overlap, such as record keeping, and help companies integrate management work while maintaining the internal processes that can be certified internationally, enhancing appeal to potential business partners. Pardy said in the case of large industrial projects in this province, the project leader — the local arm of a multinational — might ask about the safety management system of a potential subcontractor.
“That capability, I guess, is for most of the construction projects that are happening in the province now. The ExxonMobils of the world, they want to see that evidence that if we award the contract, you’ve got these systems in place and they’re working and they’re effective,” he said.
“They’ll say, ‘give me some objective proof that you can at least do what you say you do,’” echoed Andrews.
Pardy said it’s easier for a company to check for a certification then to take it upon itself to evaluate all of the inner workings of a company interested in doing business.
Andrews said the pair have been working locally with oil and gas companies such as AKCS Offshore Partner Ltd. “AKCS started out with a quality management system and a health and safety system and then put in an environmental management system. Well, those are three systems that are producing information or being managed separately. So what AKCS has done is said, ‘OK, we’ve got overlaps in those systems,’” she said.
